Bristol
Bristol is both a city and a county with over 410,000 inhabitants, making it the most populous city in the South West. It is serviced by the M4 motorway with links to London and Wales, and the M5 motorway with connections to the North and South West.
Bristol has a rich maritime history as the River Avon meets the Bristol Channel, which made Bristol an important port and centre of trade. The River Avon cuts through Bristol itself, creating the famous Avon Gorge which is spanned by the Clifton Suspension Bridge.
One of the warmest and sunniest cities in Britain, Bristol is partially sheltered by surrounding hills and experiences only average UK rainfall.
Bristol has a rich cultural heritage including the Bristol Old Vic theatre Company, Bristol Hippodrome Theatre, Colston Hall and the SS Great Britain Museum. The city is famous for its music and film industries, and was a finalist for the 2008 European Capital of Culture. Every August, Bristol hosts one of the largest international hot air balloon festivals in Europe.
Bristol is a thriving university city as well as being a busy industrial centre with strong aerospace links. The city also has excellent public schools including Badminton School, Colston and Red Maids schools for girls, and Bristol Grammar School.
Currently Bristol's main shopping centre, Broadmead, is undergoing a complete renovation, and the strong building growth is reflected by the recent development of the Harbourside area with new build apartments and townhouses, as well as many new build developments in and around the city.
Bristol's prosperous history can be seen in the many fine Victorian and Edwardian properties throughout the city, especially in the desirable Clifton area.
Further afield, Bristol lies close to areas of natural beauty, such as the Mendip Hills with Cheddar Gorge and its caves. Many peaceful villages lie in the surrounding area, giving you a greater choice in location while retaining easy access to a bustling, thriving city life.
