Pembrokeshire

Pembrokeshire is a maritime county, surrounded by the sea except on the eastern side where it is bounded by Cardiganshire and Carmarthenshire. Its old Welsh name "Pen Fro" means ‘ Land’s End’ and even inland you are never far from water.

The population is around 115,000.

The county boasts 170 miles (≈275 km) of magnificent coastline which is protected by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and hosts important seabird breeding sites and numerous bays and sandy beaches. Various boat trips take you to Ramsey Island and Island. These small islands off the west coast are RSPB reserves whose waters are home to dolphins, seals and porpoises. Caldey Island to the south is owned and run by the Reformed Order of Cistercian monks, who live a simple life farming the island alongside a small village community. A large estuary and natural harbour lies to the South West known as Milford Haven.

There is an abundance of castles in Pembrokeshire with the majority found along an imaginary boundary called the Landsker line, a cultural and linguistic boundary which divided Pembrokeshire in two and stretches from Newgale on the west coast to Amroth on the south east coast. Over 50 castles and strongholds were built along the Landsker line by the Normans and Flemish in the eleventh century to protect south Pembrokeshire from the indigenous Welsh who had been forced to move to the hilly country in the north of the county and which is now mostly Welsh speaking whilst the mainly English speaking south is known as ‘’Little England beyond Wales’’.

Haverfordwest serves as the market town for most of Pembrokeshire. The county’s main industry is tourism with fishing villages such as Tenby and its surrounding area attracting the most visitors.
